MIXOLOGY

MIXOLOGY

Mixology is the art and/or science of mixing cocktails.  It is not bartending.  While often the two terms are connected with each other, a bartender knows how to make basic drinks and serve beer, wipe the counter down, and work at lightning speed to serve drinks in a crowded bar.

A mixologist however, is a person who develops and knows how to balance a cocktail and serve it to perfection every time.  Today this is a very gray area.  Sometimes you have free-pouring bartenders who call themselves mixologists when all they really do is know how to shake a martini or whatever the signature cocktail du jour is.  While both bartenders and mixologist are very important when it comes to the hospitality business, it is important to remember a mixologist does not belong in a college bar and a bartender does not belong in a restaurant or lounge who are charging $11+ per cocktail.  I can give you a dozen examples of situations where and how this term is abused, but I’d rather just go into details about what it is, rather than what it is not.
